Health Insurance - Can you Afford Not to?

This mornings Taranaki Daily News article titled 'Ten month wait time for physio' might strike a raw nervce for many with hospital waiting lists predicted to get unbearably worse in the near future.  This is a concern for everyone, can you or a family member or elderly neighbour afford to wait?

Long waits for health procedures have a detrimental effect on quality of life.  Along with the wait, there comes the cost.  You may not be able to afford the thousands of dollars it would cost.  A heart operation could set you back in the vicinity of $58,000 with hip and knee replacement surgery approximately $25,000.

Paragon Insurance clients have claimed in excess of $2.2 million of health insurance claims since 2003.... these clients didn't have to wait and could afford the procedures.  Yet only approximately 30% of New Zealanders have private medical insurance and the number is steadily decreasing.  This compared to 55% of Australians where private medical insurance is essential in order to claim a tax benefit for high income earners.

Take the time to talk to your loved ones about taking out some form of private medical insurance.....can you afford not to?
